They were crushed while demolishing a house; owner arrested

Two men were crushed to death after a wall of a house in Korukkupet collapsed on them.

The pair along with two other construction workers, who miraculously escaped, was demolishing the house when the accident happened.

R.K. Nagar police said the accident took place around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday at the house belonging to Jamal Mohammed (56), a realtor, on Nehru Nagar, 3 Street. Ezhumalai (40) from Ezhil Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Pandiyarajan (41) and Rajendran (53), both from Patel Nagar, Korukkupet and Panneerselvam (49), a pavement dweller in Korukkupet were working in the building.

Pandiyarajan and Rajendran climbed on the roof of the building and started removing the asbestos sheets while Ezhumalai and Panneerselvam were collecting them from the ground. “The two men on top stepped on a sunshade which gave way along with portions of the front wall. Ezhumalai and Panneerselvam who were standing underneath were crushed under the debris and died on the spot,” said Inspector of Police, R.K. Nagar, B. Arulmurugan.

Pandiyarajan and Rajendran fell to the ground but escaped.

The two men along with some neighbours rushed in and cleared the debris in an attempt to rescue the trapped men.

However, their efforts were in vain and the bodies of the victims were sent to the Government Stanley hospital.

Mohammed had employed the four men who started work on demolishing the house around 9 in the morning.

They had planned to remove all the asbestos roofing and later raze down the wall to make way for new constructions at the spot.

R.K. Nagar police registered a case under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC and arrested the owner Mohammed, police sources added.
