Five men including a Sub Inspector of Police travelling in a car on the East Coast Road (ECR) died on the spot after their speeding vehicle crashed into a stationary sand lorry at Kanathur. The men were returning from a pilgrimage trip to a temple in Thirunallar.
Adyar traffic investigation sources the accident took place around midnight between the Kanathur police station and Muttukadu check post. The Maruti Swift car driven by Suresh (39), a realtor from Gummidipoondi was speeding towards Chennai when it rammed into the empty sand lorry. The car got caught under the rear of the lorry.
Police personnel from the Kanathur police station rushed to the spot but all the five men in the car were killed on the spot.
Following preliminary investigations the bodies were shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Further probe is underway to identify rest of the victims.
