DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday asked the State government to state what steps it had taken to retrieve an extent of government land, worth Rs.200 crore, located in the heart of Chennai city.
In a statement here, the DMK leader said the government had leased the land in favour of the Agri-Horticultural Society, located on Cathedral Road. Even after expiry of lease period, the Society failed to vacate from the disputed property measuring 4 cawnies, 18 grounds and 1,683 sq.ft.
Narrating the efforts made by the DMK government to retrieve the land since 2004 and the legal battle initiated during his period, he said after the change of government, the Chennai District Collector passed an order in 2011 cancelling the show-cause notice issued against the Agri-Horticultural society and confirmed the title of the land in favour of the Society.
He said when the matter was pending before the Madras High Court, it was informed during November 2011, that the Principal Secretary-cum-Commissioner of Land Administration had issued a fresh show-cause notice to the Society and put on hold the earlier decision of the district collector.
He raised the question as to what steps had been taken in the one year since such an order was issued to retrieve the land.
