Yet another round of power outages hits Velachery

August 05, 2014 07:23 am | Updated 07:23 am IST - CHENNAI:

Velachery was plunged in darkness for over five hours on Sunday night, running through to Monday.

Raji Cherian, a resident of Janakpuri, Velachery, said the power that went off at 4 p.m. on Sunday was not restored till 1 a.m. on Monday. Power once again went off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Residents complained that problems with electricity supply were a recurring phenomenon with energy requirements surging ever since malls and hotels started functioning in the area.

Residents of Velachery have been facing intermittent power cuts over the past one week. Authorities blame breaker faults in the Velachery substation. Similarly the area went without power supply for more than five hours on July 27 because of a fire in the substation.

A senior official of Tangedco said that the three main transformers in the substation are old and are damaged frequently because of electricity overload. Authorities propose to replace all the breakers inside the transformers to rectify the problem, he added.
