Work on incomplete roads within Corporation limits will resume thanks to fresh funding to the tune of Rs. 432 crore by Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO).

“A portion of the funds will be released next week. The incomplete road works will resume shortly,” said an official.

A number of the major civic works including roads and LED streetlights have been delayed owing to lack of funding.

During the recent rains, city roads had taken a battering.

Before the Lok Sabha elections, the civic body had initiated a project to lay 10,000 interior roads primarily with cement concrete and asked utility agencies to prevent the digging up of such stretches. But the civic body was unable to implement the ambitious project on time owing to paucity of funds.

Over 1,900 roads reportedly remain incomplete as bills of contractors for other completed works have not been settled.

The civic body will start preparing estimates for other roads yet to be taken up. Telecom service providers, Metrowater and Tangedco will be asked to avoid digging up such stretches.

Many interior roads identified are less than 6 metres wide and some range from 6-10 metres, sources said.
