The Velachery station of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) is set to get a call taxi stand very soon.
Southern Railway has finalised the contractor for operating the stand in the railway station that has become popular of late.
A senior official of Southern Railway, while confirming the proposal to open the call tax stand in the station, said the Katpadi railway station would also have a taxi stand.
The official said that the call taxi stand at Velachery station would be spread over an area of over 4,700 square feet and the one at the Katpadi station would have an area of close to 2,000 square feet. The official said the decision to run a stand at the Katpadi station was taken as several leather manufacturing units are located near Katpadi.
Though Southern Railway has allowed an autorickshaw stand at the Velachery station, passengers say they are not benefitted as the drivers charge exorbitant fares.
R. Chandra, a senior citizen, complained that despite the presence of a police outpost near the station (under the Velachery flyover), auto drivers continue to fleece passengers. She expressed the hope that the taxi stand would put an end to this.
