To combat the everyday problem of mounds of garbage, mostly non-degradable plastic waste, piling up at railway stations, Southern Railway has launched a massive cleanliness drive, not just in the city and its suburbs, but all over the State.
The drive is part of Indian Railways’ nationwide drive. Painting of stations, clearing of garbage accumulated on platforms and along railway tracks, and cleaning of toilets, concourses and waiting rooms will be taken up.
“The objective is to ensure all spots where there is passenger interaction remain neat and clean,” said a senior official, after inspecting a city station on Friday.
He said there are instructions for officers in the rank of divisional railway managers to inspect one station in their division every day, and further, senior officers in the level of general managers must supervise the drive, apart from making periodic inspections.
The Southern Railway administration has planned to involve scouts and guides, college students and members of self-help groups during campaigns to create awareness among passengers on keeping platforms and trains neat and clean.
They will be urged to not throw garbage, especially disposable cups, plates and bottles on the tracks, which is a huge challenge for workers to clear up.
