Woman gives birth to triplets in Chennai

For the past few days, N. Vimala has been the centre of attention at the post-caesarean ward of Government Maternity Hospital, Egmore.

This 25-year-old mother from Karumbur near Singaperumal Koil delivered triplets — all girls — at the hospital, last Thursday.

As she lies asleep on the bed, her two little ones — covered in blue and red woollen clothes — are wide awake, unaware of the curious onlookers around them.

Their sibling is building up her strength in an incubator at the hospital.

Vimala underwent surgery when she was 35 weeks pregnant, said hospital staff.

The babies weighed 1.8 kg, 1.9 kg and 1.5 kg, respectively, at birth, said a hospital official.

Daily-wage family

Her husband Nithyanandhan does saree embroidery for a living, and the couple already has a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

“They depend on his daily wage. I don’t know how they are going to manage,” said D. Amudha, mother of Vimala.

She said the family did not know Vimala was carrying three foetuses until she took an ultrasound scan during the fifth month.

“She is very weak after surgery and has intense pain. I want her to grow strong both physically and mentally to manage the babies,” said Amudha.
