Warming up to climate change

September 12, 2014 10:11 am | Updated 10:11 am IST - CHENNAI:

For those concerned about the environment, the three-day Clima film festival — on till September 13 and organised by Ennovate Global and Good Relations India, in partnership with United Nations Foundation — will showcase a collection of award-winning films on the impact of climate change across the world.

Taking place at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, the festival will screen around 16 films. Alka Tomar, CEO, Ennovate Global, said, “Through the festival we hope to sensitise the civil society and the public on the issue, and how we can adapt and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.”

In the run up to the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit on September 23, the festival aims to generate maximum awareness on the challenges that lie ahead.

However, the festival does not look to raise awareness merely by screening films. To contextualise the issue, discussions, anchored by specialists, on themes such as the impact of climate change on the coast and Chennai, and the ways in which the media frames the debate, are planned. S. Gopikrishna Warrier, regional environment manager, Panos South Asia, said, “Despite most people having heard about the issue of climate change, it still remains in one’s mind as something abstract. We want people to understand how it affects their everyday life.”

The festival was inaugurated by Governor of Tamil Nadu K. Rosaiah.
