In two separate places in the city, residents have come together to voice their opposition to the location of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) outlets.
In Srinivasa Nagar, Peerkankaranai, a shop is located just 50 metres away from Perungalathur railway station. Apart from campaigning with local bodies for the removal of this outlet, residents’ welfare associations conducted a signature campaign recently and forwarded the petition to the Kancheepuram district collector and Tasmac administration.
Revenue department officials said they had received complaints in this regard and will raise the issue with government officials as well as Tasmac.
In Royapuram, students of Bharathi Women’s College and members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) boycotted class seeking the closure of an outlet located near their college on Tuesday. The students protested outside the State Guest House, Chepauk.
Students said they had been requesting the Chennai Collector to close the outlet for more than 10 months and despite the Collector’s orders to shut it down, the shop continued to operate near the college.
