Karna Prayag Trust, an NGO working with destitute children and childless couples, organised its fifth endowment programme on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, Sita Venkatramani, one of the trustees, said the organisation, formed 34 years ago, has rehabilitated close to 1,300 babies, 800 of whom were adopted.

The rest have been nurtured and returned to their biological parents.

“Karna Prayag, with the government's approval, handles both in-country and inter-country adoptions,” Ms. Venkatramani said.

The trust, which receives destitute babies through the police and government agencies, rehabilitates them at its centre.

“We also have a day care centre that takes care of babies at subsidised rates and we try and maintain a 3:1 ratio of babies and nurse aides,” Ms. Venkatramani added. Often, the babies brought to the institution are undernourished or premature, and hospital care is given if needed, she said.

The importance of humour in life was stressed and exhibited through rip-roaring anecdotes by ‘Crazy’ Mohan, at the event. Valli Murugappan, trustee, was also present.
