Artistes honoured

Art is the only answer to various problems people face in today’s world, actor Suhasini Maniratnam said at the 28 Margazhi Mahotsav held at Bharat Kalachar on Sunday.

“It is a time when we are witnessing unrest in so many countries and states. When we look for answers to such problems, we see that art is the only solution,” she said.

Instead of differences, the next generation must be taught art, said Ms. Suhasini.

The awards conferred on the occasion included: Gnana Kala Bharathi on carnatic musician Trichur Ramachandran, Viswa Kala Bharathi on Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri and dancer Priyadarshini Govind, Natya Kaladhar on actor Radhika Sarathkumar, Acharya Kala Bharathi on dancer A. Janardhanan, Kala Seva Bharathi on founder of Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana, V.V. Sundaram, and journalist Malathi Rangarajan, Nadaga Kala Bharathi on actor Bombay Gnanam, Gana Kaladhar on singer Vani Jayaram, Sangeetha Kala Bharathi on sitar player Janardhan Mitta, Laya Kala Bharathi on mridangam exponent Madras A. Kannan, Natya Sangeetha Kala Bharathi on vocalist Nandhini Anand, flautist T. Sashidhar and mridangam exponent Adyar Gopinath.

Several artists were conferred with Yuva Kala Bharathi Awards 2014.

Bharatanatyam exponent C.V. Chandrasekar, Carnatic musician Trichur Ramachandran, chairman of Kalpathi Investments Kalpathi S. Suresh were among those present at the event.

Bharat Kalachar’s annual souvenir was also released during the occasion.
