‘An exposition of disappointment, hope’

August 23, 2014 08:05 am | Updated 08:05 am IST - CHENNAI:

The failure to close the Andaman Trunk Road despite a Supreme Court judgement was one of the driving factors for writing ‘The Last Wave - an Island novel’, said its author Pankaj Sekhsaria. He was addressing students at the Asian College of Journalism on Friday at the launch of the novel. Writer and activist Nityanand Jayaraman was in conversation with the author.

The Andaman Islands can be termed the protagonist as the story revolves around it, particularly the Jarawa tribe. “It is an exposition of disappointment and of hope. We could not get the apex court’s order implemented despite approaching people at all levels,” he said.

Mr. Pankaj, who is also an activist, said that through non-fiction, it was possible to write about only one aspect of the island. “Through fiction, I can speak about everything related to the Andamans,” he explained.
