Residents of Mathiazhagan Nagar are at their wit’s end trying to figure out how their water turned black.
For one month now, residents of this locality in Saligramam have been getting water supply that displays clear signs of contamination. It is believed that blockages in drainage lines in Mathiazhagan Nagar and Dasarathapuram have led to sewage water getting mixed with drinking water.
“The problem occurs every year during the North-East monsoon. This year, it has started earlier. We have represented this matter to the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. But no action has been taken yet,” a resident said.
Adding to the troubles is the mosquito menace. Residents fear that the contaminated water will spread vector-borne diseases.
The problem would be solved if the Chennai Metro Water removed the blocks in drainage lines, the residents added.
“At present, we buy water from outside, or borrow water from neighbours and relatives for cooking and drinking purposes. We are going through a tough time.”
When contacted, a Metro Water official said, “We will look into the matter and remove the blocks in the drainage lines at the earliest.”
