The swimming pool at Marina Beach is getting more crowded by the day. People from across the city come to this pool, believed to be the biggest in Asia, for some respite from the summer heat which does not seem to let up.
During a bustling weekend, several people get into the pool, but it seems big enough to accommodate all of them. K.M.M. Rafi Khan, an instructor, says: “The pool is 100 and 30 metres in length and breadth respectively. The depth of the pool is 3.5 to 5 feet. This is the second largest public swimming pool in the world. We have 15 certified lifeguards at a time to keep a tab on the crowd and for managing emergencies.” Inside the pool, youngsters go berserk. They perform a bewildering range of somersaults and dives that can put gymnasts to shame. For people who prefer to spend quiet moments by the poolside, it is wholesome entertainment.
But the waters are not entirely clear. There are minor issues to be addressed.
“I come with my friends and have a great time. Taking care of our belongings is a great challenge. Someone has to keep a vigil. Given that hordes of people walk in through the day, cloakroom lockers are a necessity,” D. Karthik Muthuraman, a resident of Perambur said.
The pool is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. Coaching classes are conducted from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. from April 1 to June 14.
