People more readily visit health clubs to build their physique than they visit libraries to develop their intellect. It is easy to forget that we are what we read. Though we may not remember all the books we have read, it is actually the knowledge gained from them that has made us what we are. For those who want to develop the reading habit, The Readers’ Club, formed in 2011 in Ambattur, is the place to be.

Says its founder K. Sethuraman: “We have harnessed the strengths of technology and social media to reach out to a number of people, from a busy executive to a pre-schooler to a college goer. More than 1,000 families in the city are members of the club.”

With about 10,000 titles in their collections (English and Tamil), the club offers free door delivery across the city. Book categories include comics, quiz books, fiction, non-fiction, business and management, biography, self-help, health and fitness, humour, cookery, spiritual and travelogue.

The club is now launching an initiative called “A-Book-A-Week 4 Children.” The project is being implemented to motivate children to take to reading for at least 15-30 minutes a day. The children need to pay just Rs.60 per month, (on an average it costs one Rs.15 per book) and the books will be delivered at home. Since we have customised membership plans, every member can choose one depending on their usage.
