Kancheepuram Collector L. Sitherasenan visited the Sembakkam Lake and inspected the garbage dumping and compost yard.
Mr. Sitherasenan made the inspection last month following a request from residents, especially members of Sri Sarvamangala Residents Welfare Association.
Mr. Sitherasenan had come to Chitlapakkam Town Panchayat, where he took part in a function to dedicate the newly constructed office building. Members of the civic group made a request to the Collector to visit the Sembakkam Lake and he promptly obliged. Residents of both Chitlapakkam and Sembakkam briefed him about the problems facing the lake, including the threat of encroachments and water contamination in the form of sewage draining into the water body.
They impressed upon him the need for protecting the lake. Immediate measures such as deepening and desilting had to be carried out and the bund around the lake had to be strengthened. Mr. Sitherasenan assured residents that he would coordinate with Public Works Department, which was in charge of the lake maintenance.
