The Bureau of Indian standards observed World Standards Day on October 18 at Hotel Green Park, Vadapalani. The theme of this year’s celebration was “International standards ensure positive change” and the BIS invited several stalwarts to express their views. H.L. Upendar, Head, Marks department I, BIS, presented the World Standards Day (2013) message and the theme was presented by E. Devender, Deputy Director General, BIS, Chennai.
Dr. V. Shantha, Chairman, Cancer Institute (WIA), was the chief guest and the key note speaker. She accentuated the role of “standards” in education and health care and indicated the need for further discussion in these areas. “It is clear that standard and quality are inseparable. At a higher plane of thinking, quality is truth in thought, word and deed,” she said
The other guest speakers were V. Somasundaram, Chief General Manager (Construction, Chennai Metro Rail); Dr. Vinod Surana, Partner and CEO, Surana & Surana International Attorneys; and Dr. M.B Nirmal, founder, Exnora International.
Mr. Somasundaram presented an overview of the Metro Rail plans, the standards incorporated and the various challenges in the process. Dr. Vinod underlined the benefits of implementing standards in a law firm. Environmentalist Dr. Nirmal asserted the need for standardised waste management and his role as an educator in this aspect. “It is not waste management but wealth management,” he said.
The evening saw an amalgamation of dynamic thoughts and ideas put forth for creating a “standardised” society.
