In the petition, the residents thanked the Mayor for passing a resolution in December 2012 to widen Kaliamman Koil Street, and acquire 37,600 sq. m. of private land on either side of the street for the project. Link road

“When the road is widened, traffic congestion will reduce considerably on Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Arcot Road. The street is a link road for K.K. Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Porur and Vadapalani,” M. Karthik Sivakumar, a resident of Illango Nagar, Virugambakkam, said. “The stretch is the worst-hit in terms of vehicular traffic. It is difficult to negotiate the thoroughfare during peak hours. The volume of vehicular traffic is more than 5,000 on any given day,” S. Jai Prabhu, a resident of Porur said.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has agreed to redesign the proposed Arcot Road-Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar 80-feet road flyover and extend it for another 1.3 km. By redesigning the existing plan, it will be extended beyond Reddy street covering Vembuli Amman temple junction and Virugambakkam church junction.
