The Virugambakkam Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition to the Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai Samiyappan Duraisamy to facilitate the road widening work on Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam, at the earliest, at a public consultation meeting.

In the petition, the residents thanked the Mayor for passing a resolution in December 2012 to widen Kaliamman Koil Street, and acquire 37,600 sq. m. of private land on either side of the street for the project. As per the Development Rights Certificate, an additional Floor Space Index (FSI) will be allocated.

“When the road is widened, traffic congestion will reduce considerably on Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Arcot Road. The street is a link road for K.K. Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Porur and Vadapalani,” M. Karthik Sivakumar, a resident of Illango Nagar, Virugambakkam, said. “The stretch is the worst-hit in terms of vehicular traffic. It is difficult to negotiate the thoroughfare during peak hours. The volume of vehicular traffic is more than 5,000 on any given day,” S. Jai Prabhu, a resident of Porur said.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has agreed to redesign the proposed Arcot Road-Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar 80-feet road flyover and extend it for another 1.3 km. By redesigning the existing plan, it will be extended beyond Reddy street covering Vembuli Amman temple junction and Virugambakkam church junction.

At the recently held public consultation meeting with Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai Samiyappan Duraisamy on the proposed flyover on Arcot Road – Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar 80 Feet Road, The Virugambakkam Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition to the Mayor to facilitate the road widening work on Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam, at the earliest.

Regarding the meeting on the proposed flyover, based on the suggestions by the public and the residents, the Chennai Corporation has agreed to redesign the proposed flyover, and extended it for another 1.3 kilometre. The first flyover plan included to cover Arunachalam Street, 80-feet Road and Reddy Street. With Chennai Corporation to redesign the existing plan, the flyover will be extended beyond Reddy Street covering Vembuli Amman Temple Junction and Virugambakkam Church Junction.

Other proposals in the petition included regular periodic meetings with Ward Councilor and Zone Chairman, an yearly meeting with the Mayor, upgradation of Corporation Welfare Centre in Natesa Nagar to a full-fledged hospital, implementation of gasifier at Virugambakkam Burning Ghat, and construction of Storm Water Drains in (SWDs) in Virugambakkam.

Mayor Duraisamy has assured the Association to start the road-widening works, and look into other proposals at the earliest.
