Walking on First Cross Main Road in the north phase of Ambattur industrial estate is an unpleasant experience.

For several months now, employees of various industrial units in the north phase vie with vehicles for space. S. Gowri, a resident of Pattaravakkam, said, “It is very difficult to walk on many of the by-lanes of Third Main Road, Ambattur industrial estate. When I have to walk through First Cross Main Road, I cover my face to escape the dust kicked up by the passing vehicles.”

Industrial unit holders in the area said the work on constructing a flood water carrier channel is being prolonged for several months. The road width has considerably reduced. Sewage from adjacent lanes collects in the open channel and creates a breeding ground of mosquitoes. They demanded that the portion of the channel being built on the First Cross Main Road also be covered with concrete slabs.

Ravi Shastry, an industrial unit holder in the area, said the delay in the work has hindered traffic movement on the road. On this stretch it is difficult for two vehicles plying on the opposite directions to cross each other. Trenches on either side of the road must be closed and a footpath provided for pedestrians.

Officials of the Water Resources Department said the work to provide a box culvert for a distance of 840 metre is being delayed because of the shifting of utility lines. This project was devised to prevent flooding in the estate whenever the Ambattur lake was full. “We plan to complete the work by September,” said an official.
