As many as 400 differently-abled people across India took part in the 12th National Paralympic Swimming Championship organised by Rotary Club of Nanganallur along with Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu from Dec. 6 to 9, under the project ‘Ripples Chennai 2012.’
The event was inaugurated by Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy and V.K. Jeyakodi, Principal Secretary for Differently-abled; Velachery MLA M.K. Ashok, M. Vijaykumar, Secretary, TNPSC; Sebastian Xavier, Senior Sportsperson, Southern Railway and Olympic swimmer; Edwin Nevis, CEO, Scope International was part of the event.
Rema Devi, President, Parlaympic Swimming Association of Tamilnadu, and Ananda Jothi, Technical Director, felicitated the participants. The event was organised under the guidance of P. Madhavi Latha, General Secretary of Parlaympic Swimming Association of Tamilnadu and founder of ‘Yes we too can movement.
Rotary International District Governor Raja Seenivasan along with District Secretary Sriram and Chairman - Zone12 Vinod Sarogi presented the medals for the winners.
Mr. Raja Seenivasan said that Rotary International has been donating artificial limbs and wheel chairs to differently-abled people.
At the valediction, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, B.V. Ramanaa, distributed the prizes and Villivakkam MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar presided over the event. V.S. Ravindran, president, Rotary Club of Nanganallur, handed over books donated by Rotary International to Ms. Madhavi Latha.
