Works on installing new streetlights to brighten the roads in Palavakkam will be completed by this year-end. The Electrical Department has begun the work of replacing old and malfunctioning streetlights.
T. Vishwanathan, Councillor, Ward 185, Chennai Corporation, said, “The new streetlights are being installed in interior areas in Palavakkam. The Chennai Corporation recently brightened the Palavakkam Beach Road and scenic East Coast Road with new street lights from the stretch – Kottivakkam to Akkarai.”
Already, new electric poles have been put up, and malfunctioning street have been taken up for up-gradation. Going by the pace of works, the works will be completed by this year-end. Works on laying tar and cement roads in Palavakkam has been completed, he pointed out.
“However, we are not able to tackle the street-dog (Palavakkam Beach) and mosquito menace at Palavakkam. Walkers and visitors to the Beach have complained of rampant stray-dog menace.
The leftovers such as carry bags, paper plates and food items on the beach attract the dogs, causing apprehension among the visitors and walkers. We have made it mandatory to clean the Beach three days a week, and free it from plastics and garbage,” he added.
Regarding, mosquito menace, the civic workers have been conducting fogging operations regularly to control the menace, but in vain. It would be appropriate if the Public Works Department takes steps to de-silt the Buckingham Canal at the earliest, Mr. Vishwanathan said.
