As an academician and writer, Sivakumar has conquered many frontiers. As a social worker, he has conquered many hearts, says T.S. Atul Swaminathan

He has rubbed shoulders with eminent personalities from all walks of life. He has many achievements to his credit, ranging from science to social service. But his crowning glory is his simplicity.

Meet Dr. E.K.T. Sivakumar, teaching faculty, scientist, writer, social activist and journalist. Right from his days at Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, where he pursued BSc Chemistry, he has shown a keen interest in social service, especially in caring for the differently-abled.

Environment and pollution

He was also drawn to other activities, including presentation of talks on on environment and pollution on radio and television.

After completing his masters and doctorate in chemistry, he joined a reputed health care company as a scientist. “I continued to be a social worker, donating sewing machines, hearing-aids, tri-cycles, and distributing educational scholarships to meritorious students from rural backgrounds. From 1993, I started writing Tamil and English books on various subjects, including environment, hygiene, global warming, education, and chemistry.”

His notable works include Sugam Tharum Sugatharam, Thadaikalai Thandiya Thamb, and Elements of Spectroscopy.

Authored many books

Till date, he has written more than 15 books. Dr. Sivakumar is also the editor of a Tamil Science magazine, titled Valarum Ariviyal. He has submitted many research papers at national and international level. “In 2008, I was awarded the ‘Best Scientist of the Year’ award by the National Environmental Science and Academics, New Delhi, and in 2012, I received the lifetime achievement award by The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, for my contribution in the field of social service, and the ‘Best District Chairman’ award by Lions Club International District 324AA for my service in education,” says Sivakumar, a resident of Nungambakkam.

Sivakumar, who is currently working as teaching faculty, Centre for Nano Sciences and Technology, Anna University, believes education and science play a vital role in a nation’s development.

“I will strive to give meritorious students from rural backgrounds a good education to make India a developed nation,” he says.
