To facilitate the road widening works on Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam, a team of surveyors from the Revenue Department, Chennai Corporation, Mambalam-Guindy Taluk Office, and Nungambakkam Taluk Office, inspected the stretch recently. It has been proposed to widen the road to 1,950 metres from the current 1,140 metres. The total length of the road is 3.10 kilometre. The civic body will acquire 37,600 sq. m. of private land on either side of the street for the project. As per the Development Rights Certificate, an additional Floor Space Index (FSI) will be allocated.

“The road should be widened at the earliest. The street is a vital link road to K.K. Nagar, Valasaravakkam, and Porur.

Vehicular traffic on the stretch has increased manifold ever since the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex was inaugurated,” A. Prabhu, a resident of Virugambakkam said.

“It is difficult to negotiate the thoroughfare during peak hours. The MTC bus services is infrequent during rush hours,” said A.R. Jayakumar, a resident of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Virugambakkam. Earlier, the Virugambakkam Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition to the Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai Duraisamy to fast track the road widening work on Kaliamman Koil Street.
