Third Main Road in Ambattur Industrial Estate needs to be relaid after pipe-laying works are completed.

The Third Main Road in Ambattur Industrial Estate has been frequently subjected to digging for development work, leading to inconvenience for residents. With another bout of digging, this time for the laying of water pipelines, the road is again posing a challenge to pedestrians and motorists.

S. Sivaraman, a factory worker, said the road was re-laid after several years in 2011, but was dug up once again to lay water pipelines. Later, the trench was covered with concrete, which spelt danger for motorists. The road surface is not as smooth as earlier.

Likewise, many other roads in Ambattur are in a bad shape as they are frequently dug by different government agencies to carry out their respective jobs. “We do not want to know about the project details. Just tell us when our road will be restored,” a resident of Vellalar Street said.

Motorists said using the stretch between Mogappair West intersection and Ambattur Telephone Exchange signal was a nightmare. “The stretch is promptly barricaded. It is the only solace to motorists,” added Sivaraman. K. Narayanan, a resident of Ambattur O.T., said plying through the pothole-ridden stretch resulted in damage to suspension and steering box of vehicles.

As it connects southern districts of the State to northern and western parts of Chennai, heavy vehicles ply on this road. The road does not have a median and it poses a serious threat to light vehicle drivers.

Resident of a locality on Athipet Main Road Hema Murali alleged that the road was repaired and tarred in a hurry just before the recent spells of rain.

She said the Chennai Corporation should ensure proper coordination among the departments.

According to Corporation sources, once the repair work on water pipelines, taken up recently, is completed , the work on arterial roads will begin.
