Residents believe there is no alternative to such a facility. T.S. Atul Swaminathan reports

The Chennai Corporation porposal for a flyover from Arcot Road to Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar 80-feet Road has received the thumbs-up from road-users and residents alike.

Many believe that the flyover will enforce lane discipline, violation of which has been leading to traffic chaos during peak hours.

“It would be good if the flyover starts from Arcot Road, Vadapalani and ends at Arunachalam Road, Saligramam Junction. Drivers don’t care about rules and regulations here. The flyover might bring some discipline,” said V. Jai, a motorist.

S. Arun, a resident of Saligramam, is on the same page. Two-wheelers, cycles and auto-rickshaws criss-cross on the road, the over-bridge will help address the issue, he says.

And the flyover will definitely ease traffic on this busy stretch.

“The vehicular traffic on the side lanes moves at snail pace due to heavy congestion on the arterial road during rush hours.

Vehicles going beyond Kamarajar Salai, Virugambakkam, can proceed via the flyover,” said S. Arumai Nathan, president, Virugambakkam Residents Welfare Association.

The first blueprint of the flyover covered Arunachalam Street, 80-feet Road and Reddy Street. In June, a public consultation meeting was held and based on the suggestions the Chennai Corporation agreed to redesign the plan to extend the flyover to another 1.3 km.

The new flyover will cover Vembuli Amman Temple Junction and Virugambakkam Church Junction.

The Chennai Corporation Bridge Department officials said that at present feasibility study was being conducted, following which based on which a report will be prepared and appropriate decision taken.
