Garodia Charitable Book Bank organised a free college books distribution programme on July 6. C. Chellappan, Dean, College of Engineering, Anna University, distributed the books to 182 students from various colleges.
Chellappan said it was important for them to gain knowledge and skills, have a positive attitude and increase their employability.
They should not restrict themselves to the syllabus, but read extensively to acquire knowledge.
Each of the two beneficiaries of the book bank programme, Vijayalakshmi and Revathi, who finished as University first rankers, was honoured with a citation, a cash award of Rs.10,000 and a gold medal.
Ashok Kedia, managing trustee, Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya Trust, said the trust had spent Rs. 80 lakh on purchasing the books and nearly 65,000 students from various colleges had benefited so far.
Delay in return of books
The only condition for issue of books is that students must return the textbooks after their examination. “There is 100 percent honesty among students,” the book bank’s chief coordinator K.S. Kesavan said.
Since its inception, the book bank had not faced any problem. The only hassle was the delay in return of books, he said.
He, however, added that the problem would be sorted out soon.
Kesavan and G. Vijayakumar, principal, Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya, also spoke.
