The inordinate delay in construction of stormwater drains outside Elegant Apartments on Lake View Road, West Mambalam, has been causing hardships to residents.

With the northeast monsoon expected anytime now, the construction work that started on October 3 is yet to be completed.

The worst is the sewer drains (under construction), which are filled with construction debris and sewerage water due to a breakage in the main sewer line.

The workers have put pre-fabricated slabs over the drains without de-silting the storm sewers and have broken the Metro Water pipeline while digging for stormwater drains.

The sewerage has entered the Metrowater inlet chamber.

“We have made several representations to the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Chennai Corporation, and Ward Councillor (135), but no action has been taken yet,” residents said.

In order to prevent the sump getting contaminated, residents have blocked the Metro Water (used for drinking purpose) line connecting the inlet chamber.

We are buying drinking water from outside. Adding insult to the injury is the mosquito menace in the area. We fear that the sewerage in the inlet chamber and drains would spread vector-borne diseases, they added.

When contacted, 135 Ward Councillor S. Padmini said the work on constructing the sewer drains on Lake View Road would be completed at the earliest and the drains would be de-silted.
