Raindropss celebrated Deepavali with 275 children from orphanages such as Sevalaya, Seers Home and Bala Gurukulam, at Spencer Plaza on October 27. The evening was filled with music and dance, with magic shows and games thrown in for good measure. Film songs, old and new, rendered by ‘Udhaya Raagam’ U.K. Murali, mesmerised the children. The show began with the performance of national award winner, Arun Loganathan. With a battery of leading playback singers – including T.L. Thaegarajan, M.L.R. Karthikeyan, Velmurugan, Hariharasudhan, Deepika Thaegarajan, Aravind, Haritha and Georgina – the children overcame their shyness and danced.
Sutta Kadhai movie crew, including Divya Dharshini (DD), actor Mahendran, director of Astro Channel Malayasia, graced the occasion.
Parveen Travels helped with the transportation of children. Velammal International School, apart from providing transportation, sponsored snacks. Gifts and donations were given to the association on the day.
Raindropss, started in 2011 by Aravind Jayabal, makes use of theme songs, videos and short films to spread awareness about social issues. Their first short film, ‘Vizhigal’, bagged the ‘Silver Eye Award’ for its powerful social message on eye donation. The concerts ‘Isai Sangamam’ and ‘The musical journey of A.R. Rahman’, conducted by Raindropss, helped sponsor 51 orphaned children’s education, as part of its ‘Educate a Child’ project. The NGO has also bagged the Dr. Ambedkar Award by the Mother Teresa Trust, the TedEX Star Award and the BIG Chennaiite award.
“A.R. Raihanah, sister of A. R. Rahman, is our brand ambassador and she helped organise the concerts,” Mr. Aravind, founder – Creative Head, said.
Its upcoming project is ‘Maatram Thedi – Be the Change 2014’, featuring achievers from all walks of life. Funds raised will be used for the education of children with HIV.
