Kindling the creativity in little ones is what Sowmya Beedu, an art and yoga teacher from Coimbatore, is good at. At her art school in TVS Colony in Anna Nagar West Extension, the colourful paintings of her students invite you.
The affable Sowmya is a fine arts student who came to Chennai in 2000. She wanted to share her knowledge of art and yoga with young minds. After 10 years of hard work, she set up her fine arts centre ‘Step In’ in 2011.
Teaching young children art is a slow process, she says. “I allow students to scribble with colours for the first few days. Then put them into appropriate course.”
Though strict about schedule, Sownmya makes no compromise on the quality of teachings. Her students have won in many competitions. The prize winning works are on display at the school. She teaches Madhubani, Warli, Tribal Art and Acrylic painting to children over three years.
As a yoga teacher, Sowmya, stress the importance of its practice for maintaining good health. Many homemakers and children have enrolled in her programme.
“A study has found that people who practice yoga can fight high blood pressure,” she says.
The school also offers English courses, including spoken English, accent and pronunciation improvement.
“Young children have immense talent within them. Along with academics, equal importance should be given to these talents,” says Ms. Sowmya.
