The city police have cracked the murder of M. Visalakshi (63), who was found dead at her flat in Jafferkhanpet on September 3. Two persons were arrested on Tuesday on charges of committing the crime.
A team of police officials investigating the murder arrested Anandaraj (24) and Anand (20), residents of Soolaipallam, based on information provided by the victim’s domestic help Dhanam alias Dhanalakshmi and CCTV footage from a neighbour’s flat.
A senior official of the city police said Dhanam had engaged two youths to carry the washing machine from the victim Visalakshi’s house. The victim had told the two persons to bring customers who would be interested in taking a policy.
The accused persons allegedly hatched a plan to kill Visalakshi who was staying alone. On September 1, under the pretext of taking an LIC policy, they managed to gain entry into the house.
The two men then strangled Visalakshi, grabbed gold and diamond jewellery and silver articles worth over Rs. five lakh and fled the spot. They then sold a portion of the gold jewellery at pawn shops in Ambal Nagar and Maduranthakam.
Police officials are taking steps to retrieve the jewellery from these pawn shops.
