The officer, who was conducting vehicle checks, was knocked down by a speeding container lorry

A sub-inspector on duty on Poonamallee High Road near Velappanchavadi was fatally knocked down by a speeding container lorry early on Monday. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

According to police sources, the deceased, V. Ravichandran (54), a resident of Mangadu, was posted as SI at the Thiruverkadu (L&O) police station in August 2011.

Around 3 a.m., a police party including Mr. Ravichandran was carrying out vehicle checks near AGS Medical College. “He checked the records of the driver of a car and was walking towards the barricade when the container lorry coming towards Chennai hit the SI, throwing him a few metres away. He suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot,” said an officer.

Police personnel on the spot nabbed the driver who was later identified as Shankar (35), a native of Hosur. He was transporting automobile batteries from Hosur to Ambattur.

Sub-inspector Ravichandran, who joined the Tamil Nadu police force in September 1981, had served in different pars of the State before being posted to the L&O unit of Thiruverkadu police. He is survived by wife Jeeva, two sons and a daughter. The officer’s body was handed over to his family members on Monday noon following a post-mortem. The last rites took place the same evening.
