July 12, 2014 04:22 am | Updated 04:22 am IST - CHENNAI:

A student of Sathyabhama University allegedly committed suicide by hanging on campus on Friday morning. College authorities claimed she took the extreme step due to family problems. However, her parents cited academic issues.

Semmenchery police said B. Hemalatha (20), a fourth-year B.E. Computer Science student, was found hanging from the ceiling of her hostel room around 10 a.m. “College authorities told us that she was suffering from depression due to her father’s alcoholism. We found a suicide note in the room,” said an investigating officer.

Hemalatha’s body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, Hemalatha’s mother Jayanthi told The Hindu that a row over an answer paper of an examination her daughter recently wrote could be the behind the suicide.

The family members, on Friday, asked the Semmencherry police to verify the authenticity of the suicide note.

A suicide prevention helpline is available at 044 2464 0050.
