Train heist: 30 suspects under CB-CID scanner

August 12, 2016 08:12 am | Updated 10:57 am IST - CHENNAI:

After the CB-CID top brass inspected the Egmore railway station on Thursday, investigating officers have compiled a shortlist of 30 persons who will be interrogated in more detail to crack the robbery on the Salem–Chennai Express.

According to a senior police official, initially, 60 persons — including employees of the private parcel company — were interrogated. Following this, the list was narrowed down to 30 persons.

The CB-CID officials will quiz people on the list, some of whom are railway employees, individually, sources said. Those employed by the Railways are being interrogated because the police suspect that a robbery of such precision could not have been executed without the hand of insiders, sources added.

On Thursday morning, the CB-CID top brass visited the coach, still parked at the Egmore station, to get first-hand information about the modus operandi . In the evening, two senior officials visited the scene with welding experts and inspected the broken roof of the parcel van, sources said.

The train robbery case was initially investigated by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The case was first transferred to the Government Railway Police and later, to the CB-CID on Wednesday night.
