Officials of the Food Safety and Drug Administration department on Friday seized 8,300 kg of products from a wholesale outlet in T. Nagar. “A manufacturer on Muthurangan Salai, Kannamapet, T. Nagar was supplying adulterated ghee. We seized 7,000 kg of adulterants including colouring chemicals, vanaspathi and palm oil,” said an official.
The building was sealed. The manufacturer was reportedly adding 90 per cent adulterants for 10 per cent ghee. Such products were also sold at cheap prices with misleading information about the address of the manufacturer. “Most of the addresses were of Kangaiyam, Perundurai and Erode. But they do not exist. We have sent samples to the King Institute. We will take action based on the report,” said an official.
The adulterated ghee will have a white layer on top with vanaspathi in the lower portion of the container.
The adulterated products were sold in many retail outlets in Anna Nagar from where a number of samples have also been lifted.
