City police managed to swiftly crack the murder for gain case of a 52-year-old woman in Perambur on Wednesday. But at least two similar cases in the city remain unsolved.
On Wednesday, Durgadevi Ramachandran was found dead in her house in Maduraisamy Madham East Street. Within three hours, Thiru-vi-ka Nagar police were able to apprehend two youth, who reportedly committed the murder, and also recover the gold that had been stolen from the woman’s house.
However, in Thiru-vi-ka Nagar police limits, on April 12, last year, Sumathi Krishnakumar, a 51-year-old woman was brutally murdered in her first floor flat in Thiruvalluvar Street, Anbazhagan Nagar. Her chain and Rs. 20,000 was stolen while the rest of the jewellery in the house remained intact. The killers remain at large.
A police officer, who initially handled the case, said investigations had strongly pointed to the possibility of some relatives being involved owing to a family feud. “We were prevented from questioning some key suspects as they had strong political connections. Therefore the murder investigation didn’t move forward,” he said.
Police records reveal that the last visitors to the flat were her daughter and son-in-law who had come to return a sum of Rs. 20,000.
Similarly, a 64-year-old housewife’s throat was slit at her apartment on Masilamani Road, Royapettah on February 25, last year.
The victim, Vimala Santhanam, was reportedly found lying in pool of blood in her drawing room when her husband Santhanam (72), a retired public sector officer, came home after dropping a friend at the airport.
Some gold jewellery the victim was wearing was stolen. The case is yet to see a breakthrough.
