Murder witness dies in Chennai

A 45-year-old man, who was attacked by a gang after he witnessed the killing of a DMK functionary at Pattaravakkam in Ambattur on Sunday night, died in hospital on Friday.

The Ambattur Estate police said, around 8.30 p.m. on July 20, John alias Mani (24) was playing carrom outside his residence in Pattaravakkam, when a four-member gang hacked him to death. John’s cries brought his neighbours out of their homes and a few intervened.

But the gang turned on the residents and attacked them with knives and sickles. One Subramani, his friend, Ramesh, and his children, Lakshmanan and Anusuya, were injured in the attack and all four were admitted to Government Kilpauk Hospital. John died on the spot. Around 5.15 a.m. on Friday, Ramesh succumbed to his injuries.

Four of the assailants, belonging to one family, identified as Naga alias Nagaraj (29) — reportedly an AIADMK functionary, his brother, Santhosh Kumar (28), nephew Arunagiri (23) and uncle Raja (53), all from Pattaravakkam, were arrested on Monday. They were remanded to judicial custody.
