Mangadu police arrested a 29-year-old man who allegedly murdered his grandmother at her residence on August 10 and robbed the gold jewellery she was wearing.

Police said the suspect Manivannan, a resident of Thirumazhisai, had strangled his grandmother Alamelu Ammal (75) at the latter’s first floor residence on Mangadu Main Road, Moulivakkam. Manivannan who owned and operated a tourist van was in debt. He had stolen cash from his grandmother’s almirah on many occasions but was caught red-handed by the elderly woman on the evening of August 10. “Realising she may expose him to rest of the relatives, Manivannan attacked his grandmother and strangled her with a nylon rope. He left her body after taking the 7.5- sovereign gold chain she was wearing and locked the house from the outside before leaving to make it look live a murder for gain committed by a thief,” said an investigating officer.

He was arrested at Mangadu on Sunday evening, remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison on Monday.
