A 45-year-old man succumbed to injuries he sustained when the cement slab of a shop in Nungambakkam came crashing down on him. He had gone there to purchase cool drinks
Nungambakkam police identified the deceased as Sekar Periyasamy, a resident of Lady Madhavan Road in Nungambakkam.
A private security guard by profession, Sekar was on his way to work on Monday night when he stopped midway at the shop on the Kodambakkam High Road – Arcot Road junction.
It was around 9 p.m. when he ordered the cool drinks. Suddenly, a heavy cement slab came crumbling down on him. He suffered injuries to his head and chest and was knocked unconscious. Passers-by and shopkeepers rushed Sekar to the Government Royapettah Hospital. But he failed to respond to treatment and succumbed around 12.15 a.m. on Tuesday, police sources said.
A preliminary probe revealed that the recent downpour had loosened the structure leading it to collapse. Nungambakkam police have registered a case of unnatural death and are contemplating action against the shop owner.
