Tension prevailed outside Government Royapettah Hospital on Saturday, after relatives of the girl student of Sathyabhama University, who allegedly committed suicide, refused to accept her body, demanding action against college authorities.

The Semmencherry police said Hemalatha (20) was found hanging dead from the ceiling of her hostel room on Friday morning. While college authorities claimed she took the extreme step due to family problems, parents blamed college authorities.

A post-mortem of her body was carried out at GRH on Saturday morning. Hemalatha’s relatives didn’t accept her body and demanded immediate police action against college authorities. A student group also protested. The protestors claimed that investigators failed to show the family the suicide note allegedly left behind.

Senior police officials pacified the relatives who later accepted the body following assurance of a detailed probe. The Semmencherry police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating further.
