DMK, AIADMK workers clash near Tambaram

DMK workers staged a road roko alleging that a councillor from their party had been manhandled

November 23, 2014 09:20 pm | Updated 09:20 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A tense situation prevailed in Sembakkam Municipality areas near Tambaram on Saturday, when a group of DMK workers staged a road roko on Velachery Main Road, alleging that party councillor K. Thirunavukkarasu had been manhandled by AIADMK supporters.

Police sources said the trouble began when Mr. Thirunavukkarasu, the DMK councillor from ward number 6, entered a newly-opened public library in his ward and pulled down the portrait of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

He allegedly also pulled down the library name board put by the district library authorities.

This led to altercations between DMK and AIADMK supporters. Police arrived and picked the councillor up for questioning.

DMK party men gathered in front of the Selaiyur police station and began arguing with senior police officials.

They attempted to stage a road roko there, but were prevented by the police.

The supporters dispersed after an assurance from police officials that action would be initiated against those who assaulted the DMK councillor. The councillor was released later in the evening. “Both parties filed complaints and the inquiry is on,” said a senior police official.
