An 18-month-old boy died in Taramani on Wednesday after he reportedly slipped and fell into a bucket filled with soap water.

The Taramani police identified the victim as Vishnuvardhan, the only son of Kannan, an employee of a private firm, and Kavitha, who are residents of Karunanidhi Street in Thanthai Periyar Nagar, Taramani.

The accident took place around 9.50 a.m. when the boy was playing in the house and his mother was washing clothes. “After washing the clothes in a big bucket of soap water, Kavitha went to lay them out for drying. The child had peeped into the bucket of water, fallen inside headfirst and struggled to breathe. The mother spotted the child inside the bucket a few minutes later and pulled him out but the boy remained unconscious,” said an investigating officer.

Kavitha and a few neighbours rushed Vishnuvardhan to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him ‘brought dead’. The boy’s body was sent for post-mortem to Government Royapettah Hospital and was handed over to his parents on Wednesday evening.
