The Madras Players have over the five decades of their existence staged the works of celebrated Indian playwrights such as Vijay Tendulkar, Mohan Rakesh, Badal Sircar, R.K. Narayan, Indira Parthasarathy, Kalki Krishnamurthy and Girish Karnad. Plays by Tim Murari, Mahesh Dattani, Shreekumar Varma, Chetan Shah, Poile Sen Gupta and Sabita Radhakrishna have also formed part of their repertoire.
Komal Swaminathan’s award-winning play Thanneer Thanneer that was made into a much-acclaimed film by K. Balachander and translated into English by S. Shankar will be staged by The Madras Players on November 30 and December 1 and 2 at 7.15 p.m. at the Museum Theatre.
The play is located in the water-starved village of Athipatti in Tirunelveli district, into which a stranger stumbles upon accidently. How he stirs this village into action through self-belief forms the rest of the story. Water will be directed by P.C. Ramakrishna.
