Want to know how much you have to pay at the end of an autorickshaw ride? Now there’s an Android app to tell you exactly that.

Developed by Swathi Soft Solutions, an IT services company that builds web and mobile applications, the app helps users determine autorickshaw fares between any two locations within a radius of 100 km in Chennai. The app calculates the fare based on the revised rate system.

Google Maps is used to determine optimum routes and multiple route options are also provided. There is also a minimum and a maximum rate given – based on the route chosen and the potential speed at particular points of time during the journey.

Deepa Iyer, an IT professional who works at HP in Porur, said she had tried out the app. “From my house in Velachery to my office, which is a distance of 9 km, I should be charged just Rs. 150. But autorickshaw drivers here charge flat rates of Rs. 250 or Rs. 300. With the app I can also find out if the new meters are rigged,” she said.

K. S. Sudhakar, founder, Swathi Soft Solutions, said: “We have also developed a website – http://chennaiautofare.in/. My brother K.S. Prabhakar, who uses autorickshaws frequently, suggested the idea. It has been live since Friday. So far, our logs show that over 100 people have downloaded the app and over 1,000 people have used the website,” he said.
