The charred body of a school-going girl was found in her house in Neelankarai on Friday.

According to police, V. Gayathri (13) of Bharathiar 11th Street, studying in Standard VII at a local school, was at home on the first floor of the building when her mother who was working downstairs saw smoke emanating from the room around 6 p.m. When she went to check, the girl was found dead with serious burns.

Inspector of Police (Neelankarai) S. Sankaralingam said experts who examined the scene stated that it was a clear case of self-immolation. “The victim used kerosene to commit suicide. It appears that she took the extreme step due to family problems. Investigation did not reveal any sabotage angle,” Mr. Sankaralingam said.

The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.
