Even as a manhunt is on for the murderer of S. Swathi, security has been tightened at the city’s main railway stations, Chennai Central and Egmore, say the police.
A Government Railway Police inspector said the police were vigilant and had been given the screen grab of the accused. “We have around 30 policemen on this case alone,” he said.
Though chain-snatching and thefts of bags and mobile phones often occur inside bigger stations such as Egmore and Chennai Central, crimes such as assault are rare because of the strong police presence and CCTV cameras. “There are around 79 CCTV cameras inside Central. Though some cameras have to be repaired, most of them work and we use them extensively to solve crimes,” said the police officer.
The situation is similar in Chennai Egmore station. There are 52 CCTV cameras here. “The coordination between the RPF and government railway police is crucial to maintain law and order,” said an officer.
