Intending to increase surveillance over its parcels sent through rail, India Post is set to sign an agreement with the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for installing CCTV cameras in Railway Mail Service (RMS) coaches.
On the request by India Post, the ICF had sent a quotation for the proposal few days back and it is presently being considered by senior India Post officials in Delhi.
“As soon as the proposal is approved, the ICF would install cameras in few coaches on a trial basis. Based on the results, another plan would be chalked out,” a senior official said.
Asked whether there was an increase in cases of missing or damaged parcels transported on board RMS coaches, he maintained the move was to generally increase surveillance on parcels handled by India Post.
“We want to increase surveillance on the goods we carry. There have been some cases of missing parcels,” he said.
It may be recalled that at a function last month, Chief Postmaster General for Tamil Nadu Circle Charles Lobo had recently said there were allegations that department staff were suspected to be involved in parcels going missing.
He had referred to CCTV cameras in coaches for women passengers to check offences against them.
According to India Post, there are about 69 RMS divisions spread over 22 postal circles across the country.
