CBSE results delay keeps parents and students on tenterhooks

May 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

Delay in declaration of results by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is worrying parents and students as it could impact admissions to their preferred courses.

With the local CBSE office maintaining that they had not received any intimation from New Delhi, students are in a limbo. Over 48,000 students appeared for the Class XII and 1.23 lakh for the Class X examinations.

P. Sneha, who plans to study B.A. Literature, is worried that she is unable to apply to colleges. Her batch mate T. Vinodraj is confused. “I did not clear the JEE (Main) and aim for Anna University’s counselling. The last date for form submission is May 29. I don’t know what to do,” he says.

N. Rahul, who also wants to do engineering, says he would rather wait for the results before submitting the form. His friend P. Nigamanth has set his heart on the Visual Communication programme in Loyola College. “The college says it will extend the last date for admission. We don’t know if there is a quota for CBSE students in colleges. I am worried I may not get a seat,” he says. But some like P. Ratnadevi and N. Kiran are not stressed as they have opted for correspondence courses. “I am registering directly for CA so I don’t need my Class XII results,” says Ratnadevi. Besides, classes for correspondence begin only in August, says Kiran.

The State government’s guidelines for arts and science colleges specify that the deadline for receipt of application forms is 10 days from the publication of results or issue of mark sheet. Colleges may prepare the rank list from the 11th day onwards and counselling should be conducted between 15th and 20th days from the day of results. While Anna University permits candidates to submit mark sheets separately by quoting the application registration number, the arts and science colleges are silent on this.

Arts and Science college officials say students need not worry as admissions continue till August 31. A faculty head in Loyola College put fears to rest saying, “The first round of counselling will be held from May 25 to 29. Late application will also be processed as there is enough time.”

R. Raja Govindasamy, director, self-financing wing, Mannar Thirumalai Naickar College, Pasumalai, says latecomers can be accommodated in the self-financing courses.

School admissions

Class X students planning to switch to State board schools are uncertain. V. Balaji from Mogappair, whose daughter wrote the Class X examination, wants to send her to a residential school in Namakkal.

“We came to the school to check for admissions, but without the results they are refusing to consider our application and admissions are almost closed in these schools,” he says, adding that without a date for the results, he is unable to even bargain with the schools.
