After much uncertainty over the date of the results, the Central Board of Secondary Education released the Class XII results on Monday, with the State achieving a pass percentage of 97.06 per cent, with 11,902 students from 180 schools appearing.

With a total of 494 on 500, S. Nishok Kumar from DAV Mogappair was one of the toppers in the city. He scored 99 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with a centum in computer science and 97 in English.

“I spent around six hours a day studying, and I want to do computer science engineering,” he said, speaking over the phone from Kerala. He is waiting for the JEE Advanced results before he decides on a college, he added.

Atul Sudarshan from Modern Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur, scored 493 on 500. He is though a bit upset that he did not score a centum in mathematics. “Although I scored the marks I expected in all other subjects, I am surprised that I lost marks in mathematics,” he said.

The state performed better than almost all the other States and union territories in the Chennai Region, which comprises Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Only Puducherry, with a pass percentage of 98.36 did better. In the region, in terms of number of schools, Tamil Nadu is second only to Maharashtra, which has 223 schools.

Overall, girls did better than the boys in the State, with a pass percentage of 97.7 versus 96.61 for the boys.

A total of 6,983 boys and 4,919 girls appeared for the examination.
